Advantage: SNK America’s Applications team was challenged with the task of replacing a customer’s outdated machine running a high-feed 2 inch endmill.
The test material, similar to that of the customer’s workpiece, was a semicircular 32 inch x 6 inch thick A516-Grade 70 arched steel plate. The goal was to create an identical machining state, but to increase the material removal rate.
SNK America studied the existing machine’s geometry and spindle capabilities, and decided that the Niigata HN80D with standard 6,000Rpm 50/40Hp (30min/continuous) spindle is more than adequate for the customer’s application.
The customer’s existing machining conditions made use of a 2.000 in Dia. High feed mill, 0.120 in DOC, 90 IPM, and a material factor of 0.8. These circumstances closely confronted the limitations of the existing machinery for material removal.
SNK America invited the customer to our Tech Center in Mt. Prospect, IL to show them the capabilities of the HN80D in relation to their challenge. Under the same conditions, 2.000 in Dia. High feed end mill and a material factor of 0.8, the HN80D machined ½ the depth, 0.060 in, but nearly tripled the feed rate to 260 IPM.
As a result, the material removal was increased by 44%, and cut cycle time down to nearly ½,from 15m:22s to 7m:55s. In machining, less time-per-part means more parts on the floor at the end ofthe day, and more satisfied customers. The company was impressed by the HN80D’s capability, and purchased the next size larger, the HN100D.
